The History of the Pioneer Chapel 🕊️🌿

The Pioneer Chapel was the final addition to Pioneer Town and a true blend of two visions. R.L., a devoted Catholic, hoped for a mission-style church with Spanish clay tiles, while Madge, a faithful Baptist, dreamed of a little white chapel. During a trip to Arkansas, they spotted a log chapel that captured both of their hearts, and the idea for the Pioneer Chapel was born.

Built from a log cabin kit, the chapel became a beautiful mix of faiths and styles. Its doors came from a Lutheran church in San Antonio, pews from St. Mary’s in San Antonio, painted glass windows from an Episcopal chapel in Waco, a piano from a Methodist church, and a pulpit from a Baptist church. The antique gasoliers inside were discovered in a San Marcos department store—wired for electricity but also fitted with oil reservoirs from the early days of lighting.

Over the years, the chapel has hosted weddings, vow renewals, quinceañeras, and memorials, and even served as the first home for both St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and Wimberley Lutheran Church. Today, it remains a beloved gathering place, rich with history and Hill Country charm.
